30 August is designated International Day of the Disappeared by the United Nations and other NGOs. ‘Disappeared people’ are people who are kidnapped or killed and whose families are not told what has happened to them.

This is the case for hundreds of people in the Ukraine, where the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is trying to help people find out what’s happened to their loved ones.

Filip Warwick reports from the city of Slovyansk, about 600 kilometres east of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, where the ICRC is holding an exhibition of photos of people whose fate remains unknown.
